CTE Healthcare Occupations Freshmen were pleased to welcome Ashley Hall from Greater Lawrence Family Health Center. Ashley is the Director of the AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) program where she provides education and support to the community. Students were interested to learn about public health in our own community as well as the career possibilities associated with the field. Ms. Hall spoke with students about her career pathway and some of the work she has done as an infection preventionist and education around medication labels and healthy eating. Students were excited to learn so much about this broad and interesting topic! Special thanks to Ashley and Greater Lawrence Family Health Center for sharing your time with our students!

It’s that time of the year again! Career Technical Education alumni came back to HHS to share their insights and advice with current Juniors and Seniors. This was a great opportunity for students to learn more about the transition to college or military life. Day one brought back six alums from the Information Technology, Computer Science & Web Development and Engineering/Manufacturing programs. Day two was composed of six alums from the Healthcare Occupations and Biomedical Science programs. It was great to hear from our past students and we are so proud of all they are accomplishing!

CTE Healthcare Occupations Seniors presented their Capstone presentations. The Capstone Project is the culmination of their four years in the CTE program. Students select a topic that is important to them, research and create a deliverable. It was amazing to hear what they accomplished and we are so proud of them!

This week our CTE Biomedical Science sophomores in Mrs. Bamford’s Human Body Systems class had the opportunity to learn from Jen White, a physical therapist at Elliot Hospital!
Jen was a dynamic and engaging speaker who shared real-world stories from her career, highlighting the wide variety of settings she’s worked in—from hospital-based care to home health. Her visit was especially meaningful because students are currently working on a project where they step into the role of physical therapists, making her insights highly relevant and directly connected to their curriculum.
Jen discussed injury trends across different age groups, explained how physical therapists collaborate with other healthcare professionals, and gave students a hands-on look at tools of the trade. She demonstrated both the gait belt and the goniometer—a tool students have already practiced using in class—allowing them to see it in action and realize that this is a real tool physical therapists use every day. Several students even volunteered to help demonstrate techniques, making the experience interactive and engaging.
Thank you so much to Jen for taking time out of her day to inspire our students. We had a lot of fun—and learned a lot too!

Mrs. Johnston’s CTE Biomedical Science Freshman Class welcomed Physical Therapist Allison Stringer to speak about her career. She provided an in-depth overview of what the career entails, the educational and licensure requirements, as well as the average salary and job outlook. She discussed interesting cases and answered the many excellent questions that students had. It was an informative and enjoyable experience for students. They left class with a greater appreciation for the hard work that this career requires. Allison is also serving as a mentor for one of our seniors who is doing her capstone project in the field of physical therapy. Thank you so much to Allison for sharing her expertise with our students!
CTE Healthcare Occupations Juniors had the opportunity for an interactive discussion with Christina Bain, BSN, RN; who works as a Hospice Nurse for All Care Hospice based in Lynn and North Andover, MA. Ms. Bain is also an adjunct clinical instructor at Rivier University. She gave an overview of the role of the Hospice nurse and shared many personal anecdotes with the students. Students also had the opportunity to ask in depth questions to learn more about the nursing role in Hospice Care. Thank you Ms. Bain for sharing your time and experience with our students!

Juniors in the CTE Healthcare Occupations program began their clinical placement this week at Port Nursing Center in Newburyport. This opportunity is the culmination of 3 years of preparation. Students will assist residents at the center with their activities of daily living as well as learning how a vital center functions to provide care to our community. Students are very excited to learn about a variety of issues facing our elders as well as learning about how a Skilled Nursing Center functions. We are thankful to the staff at Port Nursing Center for supporting our program and students!

MASSACHUSETTS REGIONAL CONFERENCE FOR NATIONAL HISTORY DAY
On Saturday, March 7, 2026, four of our students competed in the Massachusetts Regional Conference for National History Day at Stoneham High School.
Three students designed a tri-fold, and one designed a website.
This involved only using 500 student composed words and drawing on almost 25 sources, 10-15 of which needed to be primary sources to compose their thesis with supported evidence.
This also involved an interview before a panel of judges from various other historical societies and former teachers and superintendents.
This was a labor of love for these kids.
Gateway schools rarely participate.

Awards and results will be made available over the next few days from the Massachusetts Historical Society.
